Re: New Windows - Andersen, Viking, Milgard? From: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsYou have a home with old wood windows that no longer open and you would like to replace them with new vinyl windows. The three brands you mention, Andersen, Viking and Milgard are all quality brands with a good track record. Andersen is the largest window manufacturer in the US. Their windows are typically wood with a vinyl cladding. If you like the interior appearance of wood with finish moulding, then Andersen is a fail-proof choice. Since Andersen windows are mass produced, custom sizes to fit existing openings can be a problem, however. However, their warranty is among the best in the business. Andersen offers the 200 and 400 series. The primary difference is that the 200 series has more restricted options, but is more competitively priced. Milgard is a more regional manufacturer, particularly well known in Western states. They make excellent products, including maintenance-free aluminum, pultruded fiberglass and vinyl windows. They also make a wood-clad window with a fiberglass exterior, giving a look similar to Andersen. Milgard doesn't have the national cachet of Andersen, but their products are widely used and have an excellent reputation. Milgard warrants their windows to the original homeowner for the life of the product. Viking makes primarily extruded vinyl windows, which are very cost effective. If budget is your concern, either Milgard or Viking are good choices. In the end, all of these products will deliver years of maintenance-free performance. Ultimately, it comes down to the look you want to achieve, both internal and external to your home...and, of course, your budget. For more information on comparing windows, see our chapter on windows and doors in our online book, Building a Dream. A nominal fee applies. As to the best place to purchase windows, this depends on which brand you select. The Home Depot, as you mention, is one good source across the country, offering a range of brands, including some of the ones you mention. We suggest getting at least 2-3 bids as prices can vary significantly, particularly depending on the type of retrofitting that may be required to fit new windows into your existing openings.
