Building a pergolaFrom: markh10k@gmail.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Email: markh10k@gmail.com Remote Name: 24.94.31.53 Date: 18 Apr 2007 Time: 12:33 AM
CommentsHello all!
I am in the process of planning out a pergola for my backyard and have drawn out most of it already. I am looking for some advice on the structural integrity and don't know where else to find information on it. Hopefully some here can help.
I am going to use redwood and the ground points were put in when I re-did my patio last year so those are the fixed starting point. I don't to add any "mid" columns if possible. The columns will be 14'8" x 13'9" apart with the lintels being 8' up.
My initial plan was for the columns to be 4x6's with 2x10's for the lintels but apparently 2x12's are cheaper/easier to find so I was thinking that I could either change to 6x6 for the columns or do 4x6 with 1x8's on the outside OR 4x4 with 2x6's in the outside. The rafters will be 2x8's at this point because I think 2x6's will sag too much going 13'9".
That's a lot of wood I'll be hanging up there so I want to make sure I get the columns right (the columns will also be braced against a 2' retaining wall on two opposing corners.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!
