Opening up a load bearing wall on Ballon Construction

I would like to know a safe way to brace balloon construction to open up an exterior load bearing wall. I don't think bracing only the floor joists is sufficient. That leaves the weight of the roof to bear down on the 1 x 4 joist support. Is there a way around this?
