Supporting a basement ceiling with a beam using no jack postsFrom: Mitchl27@sbcglobal.net Category: Structural Email: Mitchl27@sbcglobal.net Remote Name: 75.5.237.113 Date: 08 Jan 2007 Time: 09:21 PM
CommentsI would like to open my basement living area by removing a support wall from between rooms. I would like to run some type of beam in place of the wall to support the ceiling. the open span I have to support is 15ft. the beam would be supported on each end by a cement block wall with room to extend over the walls as needed. I would like to install this beam and not have to run jack post supports in between the span. The 2x6 floor joists for each room run across the existing support wall, and join and overlap slightly over the wall, with no other load above other than the main floor itself. I have looked into using a steel I beam and have room for an 8-10 inch in height beam.I need to know if this is possible and if so what size and thickness steel beam would be needed to support the load. I have also looked into possibly using a wood beam but have been told that this may not be possible without support posts. Is this true or is there an option for a possible wood beam that would support this load. Or if there are any other options for this project I would definatly be interested. Thanks for any help and suggestions you may have.
