Wall addition with a sloped ceiling

I'm adding an interior wall that butts up to an existing sloped ceiling. The new wall runs perpendicular to the sloped ceiling joists. How do I tie my top plate into a ceiling that is sloped? I'm thinking I would notch the existing ceiling joists? Would this ruin the integrity of the ceiling?
