How to clean interior brick wall

I have brick walls in my kitchen around the stove & blacksplash some pieces are missing but there are some behind the refrigerator I could use to fill in the missing ones. How do I clean the brick and prepare them to be painted and how to remove them and reapply them in the missing areas. What is the best paint to use.
