Building a garage on a floating slab or foundationFrom: mn011569@yahoo.com Category: Foundations and Basements Remote Name: 12.26.62.76 Date: 21 Sep 2006 Time: 11:07 AM
CommentsI am planning to build a 24 x 32 detached one story garage and trying to decide if I can build this on a floating slab or need a foundation. I live in the north eastern part of PA and my property is mostly flat but does have an area that drops down about 4 feet near where I want to build the garage. Three years ago I had part of that area back filled. I know garages are built on slabs in my area, however; the concern is about 1/3 of the garage will be built on ground that was filled in 3 years ago (went through 3 winters). Would this ground be stable enough for the garage? I will be building about 10 feet from the edge of where the area was filled. In other words, 10 feet away from where the land starts to slope down to virgin ground. So my question is can I float the floor or do I need to dig below the frost line and build a full foundation?
Thank you,
Mike
