Re: Installing Bathroom Tile Over Existing TileFrom: carrie.dobbin@uk.zurich.com CommentsQuestion: Is it possible to install new tile over the top of bathroom tiles which have been painted with emulsion paint? Builders Websource® Answer: While it is possible to install tile over tile, the latex emulsion paint could eventually loosen and compromise the integrity of the bond between the new tile and the substrate. Whenever you install tile over existing tile, you must abrade the existing surface with a power sander (wear a mask) or grinder. This creates a rough surface suitable for a new layer of thinset mortar and tile. However, often there are cracks or loose tiles on the old surface. Any loose tiles should be removed and replaced allowing ample drying time before applying a new layer of tile. After abrading the existing tiles, vacuum and wipe thoroughly, making certain there is no remaining dust. We often recommend a crack isolation membrane between the new and the old layer. This helps to ensure that any cracks or grout lines don't telegraph into to the new tile.
