CommentsI am in Houston, TX and built a 30'Wx60'L garage on a post-tension slab. It is wood framed (2x4x10 walls.) I have 3, 16' wide garage doors equally spaced across the front. The roof is a hip roof with 7:12 pitch front and back and 10:12 pitch on the sides. The rafters are 2x6's on 16" centers. Asphalt shingles as well. To make this a free span with no support posts inside, I used 30' BCI400 11-7/8" laminated I-joists on 16" centers for the ceiling. Here's my problem: First, I believe the I-Jiosts were too small, and second, my framers bevel cut the joists beyond the face plate to accommodate the roof pitch. I now have atleast 1" deflection at the center of each joist and I do not have any lights or drywall up. The roof is the only weight right now (i.e. no living space or storage in the attic area).
To solve this structural problem, I now want to run two steel i-beams front to back (each one 20' feet in from the side walls) and then use those same I-joists, take them down and cut them down to run perpendicular between the i-beams and the side walls (and of course in between the two beams) for the new ceiling joists.
What size steel i-beams do I need for this to support the roof, joists, drywall, and basic lighting for the garage? I don't mind the I-beams hanging below the ceiling, in fact, I would like to use the i-beams also for hoisting car engines with a chain hoist. I am planning on having the beams supported on both ends by steel posts just inside of the walls. Hope this is plenty of information. Thank you for any help. Mike.
