I beam sizingFrom: william.bratlien@navy.mil Category: Structural Remote Name: 138.162.0.44 Date: 09 Mar 2006 Time: 11:52 AM
CommentsI am trying to find out and properly size an I beam in a garage I am building. It span 11' and be used only to lift car motors (approx. 500 lbs or less). There are not any structural or overhead loads that will be tied into or resting on this beam. Strictly just to lift engines. I am thinking either a 6 x 4 wide flange or a 6 x 3 3/8ths S beam. I will be using a 1/2 ton chain hoist attached to this beam. Are either of these beams strong enough, or should I go bigger. This beam can either be set on steel or wood columns and will be attached to the vertical walls on either end as need for horizintal stability.
