Re: Installing Hardiplank® Siding Over MasonryFrom: mbconwayford@hotmail.com CommentsQuestion: Can Hardiplank® siding be installed over masonry (brick)? Builders Websource® Answer: Yes. When installing Hardiplank® lap siding over concrete or masonry surfaces, the company recommends that you first install vertical furring strips (either 2x2 wood strips or min. 20 gauge galvanized metal hat strips) over the masonry on a maximum of 24" centers (we recommend 16" centers to help avoid warping). Cover the furring strips with a weather-resistive barrier prior to final installation of the lap siding. Then caulk, prime, and paint as per instructions. Pay particular attention to flashing and clearance details. Note, however, that any irregularities in the masonry surface could telegraph through the furring strips to the final surface. Be certain that the furring strips are uniform. You can check this by running a string horizontally across the surface of the furring strips and looking for high or low spots. If the furring strips are wood, you can plane off high spots (be careful of nails) and you can build up low spots with small strips of felt paper. Installation recommendations and flashing details for Hardiplank® lap siding are available on the James Hardie website at:: www.jameshardie.com. Of course, always double-check with your local building department to make sure installation over masonry is permitted. While you're at it, another idea is to add foam insulation between the furring strips to provide further insulation as many masonry walls are poorly insulated. Builders Websource®
