I am going to remove a 16' section of a 40' long load bearing wall that divides my kitchen from the living room. This is a single storey house. The wall is supporting the roof. The load bearing wall is perpendicular to the ceiling and floor joists they support. The house is probably some 50 years old and the roof has rafters. The house is in Seaside, California so we do not get any snow. The roof is tar and gravel. What type and size beam would be suitable as a replacement?
