Support Beam size and material neededFrom: mdo8@comcast.net Category: Structural Remote Name: 24.23.98.105 Date: 15 Apr 2005 Time: 02:31 PM
CommentsI have 16w'x 20l' sunroom with a shed roof on the back of my house. The "Sunroom" windows are leaking terribly and the wood is rotten so I want to tear the "sunroom" part off and replace it with conventional construction.
The 3/12 shed roof runs out 10 feet where it is met by the "rotten sunroom" kit. The rafters are on 16" centers with 2x6's. They run out to a 2x6 and 2x4 scabbed on top of each other. The "sunroom kit" is lagged to the opposite side, thus extending the room. There is a 6x6 post in the middle of the room to help support the roof.
I would like to tear off the sunroom part and eliminate this support post and open the room up to the full 16'wx20'l if possible, but I need a beam that will be able to support the roof. It has 5/8 sheating and asphalt shingles. The walls are 2x6 on 24" centers. There are also 2x6 ceiling joists on 16" centers out the first 10 feet. I will not be using joists on the "new" part of the room so I can preserve ceiling height.
I live in Western Pennsylvania. Thank you
