support beam replacementFrom: draftsmn@optonline.net Category: Structural Remote Name: 24.184.49.200 Date: 06 Mar 2005 Time: 09:57 PM
CommentsI am trying to remove a column in my basement. Currently there is an existing I6x12.5 15'-0" long beam supported by three steel columns 7'-2" on center. I would like to replace this beam with a new W8x21 15'-0" long, thus creating a span of 14'-4" between columns (removing the midle one). The house is a single story ranch and the joist run over this beam and are not spliced. I am wondering if this beam is adequate? I am looking for tips on how to build a temporary support wall, to carry the load while the old beam is removed. And i am also going to have to cut the existing columns down, so any advice on that is also welcome.
