i'm removing about six feet of a loadbearing wall. there is already an opening supported from the attic about eight feet wide,(this goes from the outside wall to the load bearing wall) it is the opening from the living room to the dining room. what i'm trying to do is extend this open by six feet so that the room is more like a great room. i want to support this entire opening with two 2x10"x14's glued and nailed together, and they will rest on two 2x4's on each end, glued and nailed together, then lag bolted to the wall supports at each end of the opening. is this a good plan? if not what would a better one be? there is also a support beam at the end of the loadbearing wall i could leave and just put the two 2x10's between that but then i would have a column in the middle of the floor and i'm trying to avoid that.
