leveling a house that has settled in the centerFrom: fd@patmedia.net Category: Foundations and Basements Remote Name: 24.149.158.37 Date: 02 Jan 2005 Time: 11:17 PM
CommentsOur home, built about 26 years ago has settled. Strangely enough the center of the house is lower then the front and back. It appears that the lolly-columns that support the main beam in the basement are anchored to the basement floor. The floor appears to have been design to be separate from the block walls as there is a gap of about an inch or two all the way around the basement. It appears that the floor has settled more then the outer walls by a 2 or 3 inches which caused the center of the house to become lower. My question is can I jack up the main beam in the basement that supports the center of the house and put spacers between the tops of the lolly-columns and the beam to correct this problem? What should I look out for if I do this? It is only 2 or 3 inches low in the center but that is enough to be noticed. Since we are doing other work to the house we would like to fix the settling problem also.
