attaching bearing members to foundationFrom: amynmatt@comcast.net Category: Structural Remote Name: 24.62.163.111 Date: 08 Dec 2004 Time: 04:39 PM
CommentsI'm trying to get a mental idea of the work involved in replacing a section of bearing wall with a beam.
This is a simple floor load.
The beam (11 1/4" x 5 1/4") will recess into the ceiling and be attached to the joist with hangers.
This I can picture, but the plan doesn't call for king studs on each end of the beam, just two bearing members each side with metal straps to tie the beam to the old top plate. I guess with a plywood deck above and the joist hung from the beam it wouldn't move side to side (this is the gable end of both the house and attached garage, the joist are rotated parallel to the ridge beam) but with all the headers I've put in it just seems weird.
Another thing that bugs me is how the bearing members are attached to the foundation (poured in place concrete) "anchor bearing posts to foundation sill with apropriate hardware" Thanks a lot for that clarification. I asked the engineer and he just told me the framer would know. Can anyone give me website where I could get a mental picture? (L bracket, wall strap, post cap?)
