I need to determine the size of two steel beams to support the second floor and roof of a 100 year old house. The first beam needs to be 16 feet long and support a combined live and dead load of 7994 lbs or 499 lbs per lineal foot. I also want it to support one end of a 9 foot beam that will be attached to it 3 feet from its end at right angles. This beam is to support a combined live and dead load of 8600 lbs or 955 lbs plf. I want to avoid using a post where the two beams meet, which means that the long beam will have to support an additional load of 4300 lbs (1/2 the live/dead load of the 9 foot beam), 3 feet from the end. I would be very grateful for any help.
