replacing main support beam in an old homeFrom: oneflare@zensearch.com Category: Foundations and Basements Remote Name: 69.143.238.56 Date: 29 Nov 2004 Time: 05:16 PM
Commentsi have a 100 year old two story home with a basement in which the main floor has sunk do to the end of the main support beam rotting out and sinking. the span is 25 feet and the joists are true 2x8's. there is a center concrete post at 12.5 feet. im wondering what size wooden beam can span the full 12 feet without having an additional post at 6ft. or what size steel i beam could i use. i also need to put some secondary beams under the 2x8s to prevent sagging could i use a small steel i-beam to span the full 24 feet so that post are only at the ends of the beams and one in the middle?
