CommentsI would think a "tray ceiling" requires more headroom than you would have in a normal basement, but I guess it depends on the depth of the tray. Lots of finished ceilings have plumbing, and yes you have to tear into a permanent ceiling if you have to repair a problem. A suspended grid ceiling would provide easier access. Mapping is the best way to remember where the pipes are.
