Re: Load bearing wall & steel I beam sizeFrom: hawkeye1201@yahoo.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Remote Name: 12.217.79.183 Date: 09 Oct 2004 Time: 11:37 AM
CommentsThere is a lot of information you have not told us. Do you have a tile roof or other heavy roof? Is there a snow load? Is this a brick veneer house? Do the interior walls carry any of the roof truss load? If the second floor is all bedrooms, where is the bathroom?
Assuming minimum loads the bending stress on your 8 x 18 beam is over 30,000 psi. This is approaching the yield stress of 36,000. Total deflection of your beam for these minimum loads (live plus dead)is 0.71" Live load deflection only (assuming 3500 pounds) is 0.25"
In my opinion you need to invest in a structural engineer to evaluate this in detail and a different beam!
