I have a 20' garage door header made from 3 2x12 microlam beams. There is a room over the garage. I have to replace the exterior 2x12 beam due to water damage. Question 1: are 3 2x12 microlams sufficient for a 20' span? Question 2: will it make the beam any stronger if I use carriage bolts staggered down the beam to hold them together in addition to the nails?
