removing center beam installing sister type steel

i purchased a new home . midwaythe basement width in the family room is 24 ft the joists sit on a carrying beam mid way because it is so low under 6 feet im wondering if a steel channel could be sistered along each 2 by joist and bolted to it . probably expensive but is there a different way
