I am adding a 2nd story to a 1950's Los Angeles CA stucco home with a masonry chimney (both wood and gas burning). The plan calls for extending the chimney 6 ft. My county requires that masonry chimneys that high be reinforced with rebar (new requirements since the 1993 Northridge earthquake.) If the chimney is not reinforced, they told my contractor it would have to be raised and then rebuilt from scratch. I may have to choose between a stucco chimney and a brick chimney. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type? What's a typical cost difference between stucco and masonry (used brick look) in the Los Angeles County area?
