Floor joists "I" beam type, need span info? From: ian@multileveltraining.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 198.140.4.205 Date: 25 Aug 2004 Time: 03:26 AM
CommentsI am planning to finish our daylight basement area. The floor for the main living area is supported by I joists, aprox. 9 inches tall, by two inches wide, the kind with the press board suspended vertically. Anyway, they are on 24" center, the total span from foundation wall to foundation wall is aprox. 35-40 feet. There are two rows of supporting 2x4 studded walls that make the span about 15'. I need to at least temporarily remove one of these supporting walls, so I can dig a propper footing and pour a propper slab (the concrete the walls are on is all above ground...when it was built they didn't really plan for ever finishing the basement.)
My question is, how do I find out the max. span I can have on these floor joists? There are no weight bearing interior walls - I have a trussed roof that transfers all the roof weight to the exterior. Thanks,
Ian McIntosh
