partial removal of a load bearing wallFrom: mbooth2@cogeco.ca Category: Structural Remote Name: 216.221.81.96 Date: 22 Aug 2004 Time: 12:39 PM
CommentsI am interested in removing a 12' section of a 27' long load bearing wall. The wall is on the main floor of a two storey house. The main support in the basement is a 3 ply 2x8 supported by two metal posts located 7' from the exterior walls. The support in the basement runs the width of the house (approx 27')and is below the wall in question. The top floor of the house has a support wall that runs mid way along and perpendicular to the others (approx 30'in length)and supports the roof. I would like to open up the wall to make one room. There are two bedrooms above the section of the wall to be removed. I will be leaving about 2' of the wall where it meets the exterior wall, and may consider putting a post in the middle of the section that is removed. The new support beam must be placed below the ceiling joices. What type and size beam would be suitable as a replacemnt if I don't use a post, and if I do? We also live in an area with moderate snow fall(Southwestern Ontario/Detroit Michagan area)
