From the sublime to the.....You could sandblast and refinish.Install drywall between the beams and have it textured, or not and not popcorn. sleeve the beams with a hardwood plywood and stain. The fireplace could be incorporated into an encompassing architectural element with an entertainment center or book cases.etc.,etc. Also, keep in mind, the reason it was painted, may well have been caused by the use of the fireplace.
