Painted wood beams and ceiling

I just bought a house with a beamed ceiling supporting tongue and groove pine. Unfortunately, the previous owner painted both the T&G and the beams with white paint. It has absorbed into the wood. Any suggestions on what to do with this ceiling to increase it's appeal? The fireplace surround is stone and has also been painted. Any suggestions on what to do with this? Thanks, Keith
