Raising support Beam in BasementFrom: bill.a.wilson@verizon.net Category: Foundations and Basements Remote Name: 205.242.228.7 Date: 31 Jul 2004 Time: 12:41 AM
CommentsI am a homeowner, and am remodeling my basement. I hate the center H beam running along my unfinished basement, which supports my 2 story house. Beam is 17 feet long, and 16 inches high. It is about 8 inches wide. The floor joists (2x6's) sit on top of this beam. Whats cheaper, raising the beam into the joists or digging the basement (concrete slab) floor to make more head room?
Another option I think may work is to place a shorter beam (less than 16'') next to the current one, and cut the old beam in half lenth wise, in order to make more head room. Any ideas on what is the best way -cost wise- to make more headroom?
