I am planning an addition to my existing brick home with a crawl space foundation. The addition will jut out from the existing brick house by 35' and the width will be 30'(attached to the brick house). I am thinking of using three I-beams (30')to support the floor joists but am unclear if this is overkill. I am leaning toward using 3 I-beams - one to support the structure next to the existing house, and 2 more placed evenly over the 35' (parallel to the one next to the house). That way floor joists would only be sized at less than 12'. Also, I need to know what would be an appropriate type and size. The addition will have a second floor and we do we receive snow in the winter (Virginia). What do you suggest?
