Structural support beams for large open floor plans

I am building a two story house with what I thought was a very open floor plan on the first floor. There is a span of approximately 24 feet of which a wooden support beam runs. My builder informed me that this beam must have 2 vertical support post to bear some of the weight. Is there another type of beam that would be structurally adequate without having horizontal post to support it?
