I'd like to enlarge a window in my kitchen, and make a 4' wide rough opening in a load bearing wall. My house is single story with a "light" roof... rafters, plywood and foam. all four exterior walls are weight bearing and there is a center beam that runs the length of the house. the total is 960sf. what size header do I need? I'd like to place the window as high as possible on the wall and am considering using engineered lumber to get away with a smaller header... any suggestions on a simple way to calculate this? thanks, michele
