I want to reinforce a 20-foot section of existing aluminum roofing so I can eliminate the interior posts. The 4 posts, which are now at the ends of the aluminum support and at 6.66' intervals on center, support a 2”x1.5” aluminum channel. Lateral support is an existing wall, there are two walls forming two sides of the patio. I want to raise the existing aluminum support, reinforce it with the beam, eliminate the interior posts, and then drop it on to new end posts. The load of the roof is about 10 lbs per lineal foot or 200 pounds total weight, which is distributed evenly over the 20-foot span. . The very light aluminum roof, less than 1 lb per square foot, is over a 10-foot wide patio, which has been installed in a corner of the building, Can I use an S3X5.7 beam here? I want to use the smallest beam possible.
