I have a supposedly reputable contractor building my new home. His work looks good. I question the roof construction and would like an outside opinion. This is a single story with a mostly 8/12 pitch. Ceiling joists are 2x8 with 11.5' span. The rafter joists are 2x6 with a lenth of 20'. The rafter joists are spliced with a 2x4 wall beneath the splice (he refered to this as a pony wall). The thing that concerns me at this point is that the wall under the rafter splice sets on the 2x8 ceiling joists. There is no wall directly under the rafter wall. the nearest wall is 4' away and the other is 8' away. I asked him about it and he said that he has built a lot of homes and that this does not worry him in the least. I am concerned that over time I may have problems with the ceiling joists and roof sagging. The roof in this area should be designed to carry a 30 psf load. There are no local building codes where I live. Any advice would be greatly appriciated. Thanks Mark
