I have an old house built in the early 1900's and i'm trying to finish off the basement. The main room in the basement measures 15'X16'. the floor joists for the upstairs floor are 2X8, 16" center and made out of some kind of Fir wood. The joinst run the 16' lenth of the room and are a solid piece. I currently have a large beam (5-2X8's and 2pcs of 3/4'X8 plywood)running down the middle of the room (the 15' direction) to support the upstairs floor. The room directly above the basement in this area is also 15'X16' so their are no load bearing wall above the area in the basement in question. Under the beam there is only about 6'4" of head clearance. I would like to do something to either move or get ride of the beam all together. I had a coupld of thoughts That I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on or offer other suggetions. 1) Getting ride of the beam and adding 1/2X8' plywoood to each side of the current joists. 2) come out 4' from the wall reducing the 16ft spand to 12' and replacing the existing beam wth a 2x4 beam made up of 3 2x4s with a 1x2 pcs of plywood gluded between each of them? any feed back would be welcome. Thanks
