extending structural wood beam with sistering of steel or woodFrom: frank@windrush.bz Category: Structural Remote Name: 64.7.186.227 Date: 12 Apr 2004 Time: 11:59 PM
CommentsI need to remove a post and extend a double 2x12 microlam beam another 48" to a hanger on an existing, capable beam. The beam to be extended is already 29 feet in length, supported by a 2x4 wall perpendicualr to it 17 feet back from the current end point that needs to be extended to reach the new hanger point. Need to do this with a beam extension that is 8" or less vert. dimension. Considering sistering a steel plate onto the side of the double micrloam, and adding another 2x8 microlam on the side of the existing double 2x12 (doubled 2x12, then 8" vert. steel plate, then 2x8 microlam). The plate and 8" microlam would be sisteried to the top 8" of the 2x12 becasue the need is for 4" more headroom across the extension than existes uhder the current double 2x12 microlam beam. Other designs meeting these dimensions are solicited. If this design, how long does the sister need to be (taking it back approx. 17 feet to the intermediate 2x4 supporting wall would be feasible -- more is problematic), and what isze bolts/lag screws and spacings should be used?
