steel beam possible? From: chase_aise@hotmail.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 66.228.236.107 Date: 06 Apr 2004 Time: 10:51 PM
CommentsI am trying to open up the basement in my house. Currently there is a center beam (3-2x10) with support posts 8' on center. It's a single story rambler with 2x6 rafters. The rafters look like they transfer partail load to the center of the house. (24' wide) By my calculations so far I am pushing 1320# per lineal foot at the basement girder. I figured 50# LL for snow load, 10# DL for roof, and 40# LL and 10# DL for the main floor.
I was thinking about spanning either 16' or 20' (one support post is only 3' from the block wall due to the length of the house)
The local lumber yard has recommended 3 LVL's 11-7/8" to support a 16' span. but that will leave me with only 65" of clearance under the beam.
Can I get a steel beam to span either 16' or 20' and be 10" or shorter? Could I sister a pair of beams?
If so, what size would be recommended?
The floor joists overlap the beam currently.
