Plastic Bathroom tile

My parents home was built l950. Their bathroom is ALL plastic tile of may rainbow colors. Its time to change that, however, its way to huge of a job to take it all off as their whole bathroom is totally plastic tile. Please tell me that its possible to paint over that someway using whatever primer and paint necessary. The bathroom is a non shower room, so very little if any water will it the walls. Please advise.
