flitching sagging sistered floor joists. From: robmc@computer.org Category: Structural Remote Name: 216.39.146.120 Date: 15 Mar 2004 Time: 09:24 PM
CommentsI have 2x8 floor joists on 2' centers. sistered most them where needed in 1912 house using DF#2 without beveling either. The problem is most are well over a normal today span of about 10'.
I have some areas that are 11, 3 and it worked out well. I compressed them up with a 2x4 stud from underneath before applying nr83 hitachi nails 3x131s in a good pattern nailing.
A few due to being cold air return I would like to improve and 2 that are sistered at 12'3" way over spanned are still low.
My plan is to do something I once was involved in on my superintending project. There we had 4'cantilevers that were soft due to not being run the normal direction by structural engineer with 2 storys and kitchen above. They straped them with long mst straps at 45degree angle and added steel to the bottom triplers and the outside double rim joist.
Acutally I think we just put steel on the double rim. The beams were stapped and had corner brackets added. But the point is we had 3/16" x 8" steel added to the front rim with 2" special simpson nails every 6" I believe.
The builder found that if he could have used 1/8 inch steel it would have needed nails like every 4" regular nails.
My point is this I want to do something simiar with 1/8" x 6" steel plate about 10' long and would like to find out what nailing pattern would be acceptable to attach this to the double 2x8s?
