Re: Could someone explain "deadweight" v. "live load" roof deck l...From: robert.barta@solipsys.com Category: Decks Remote Name: 209.117.190.11 Date: 19 Feb 2004 Time: 10:35 AM
CommentsMy understanding is that the deadweight load for a deck should be higher than the live load. The live load is a moving entity and will exert more stress on the deck through that movement. Deadweight, such as planters and snow, is stationary and only exerts downforce on the deck. If your deck can hold 100 lbs/sq-ft live load, then it is very strong. In fact, the deck minimum is 40 lbs/sq-ft live load and most decks are built to 60 lbs/sq-ft.
Sounds to me like you aren't getting the proper spec for the deadweight load. They even told you that a 16"x16" planter covers 1.75 sq-ft, when it really covers 2.25 sq-ft.
You need to find someone who can give you the real loads on the deck before you can get some good advice.
