We have a TREX deck which is covered with mildew. So far TREX has been very slow with any response to this problem. Their answer is that any deck can mildew. I contend that the main problem is with their advertising which claim low maintenance. Now they say they recommend periodic cleaning (one web site said as frequently as every 3 months) and the necessity of cleaning the spaces between the boards frequently to be sure they do not get clogged. They also claim it has to be installed exactly right. They claim they have no responsibility for decks "due to improper installation or environmental conditions". Their list of environmental conditions seem to cover every possibility. TREX did send me a cleaning kit with my initial complaint. Two attempts to clean show so appreciable change in the mildew. The latest letter offers a professional cleaning this Spring, but otherwise indicates that any problem is ours. I would suggest that anyone looking into TREX decking carefully consider the problems with mold and mildew and find out if the store selling the material even warns you of this possibility. I would not use TREX for any amount of money in the future.
