I'm planning a basement remodeling project and need to reinforce an 18' i-beam to eliminate a middle post support. My plans are to use 2-2x10 with 1/4" (A36) steelplate & 1/2" plywood between the 2-2x10. (re-cap... 2-2x10 w/1/4" steelplate & 1/2" plywood between the 2-2x10 bolted & glued together = appx. 3.75" overall thickness) I would install one of these reinforced combination beams on each side of the i-beam. So the total combined/joined beams would=3.75"+4.5"i-beam+3.75"=12". My ? is will this be sifficant to carry the one story above this 12"x10"x18' combined beam without the original post support that was in the middle of the i-beam. Thank you very much for any assistance of this ? . Dennis McKeown dgm@zoominternet.net
