Cracksa in concrete can be from many sources. Apparently, you are already aware that improperly prepared soils can cause failure under loading. Soils should be mineral base and well drained and compacted. No loams or clay. These will allow soil movement and stress crack the concrete. Another common reason is adding too much water when pouring and finishing a slab. This makes the working easier but can result in shrinkage cracks as excess water leaves the material. Or there could have been some frost getting to it this time of year.
