Sealing a Fireplace Insert

I have an older fireplace insert which still meets inspection standards (falls within the grey area because it has proper labelling but is not a sealed unit). Anyway, I am looking for a way to seal the backside of the faceplate to the exterior surface of the fireplace wall as the unit slides into place, thus, sealing the burned by product from finding its way into the room it is heating. Is there any type of fireproof fabric or insulation that could be used for this purpose?
