Steel I-Beam vs Wood BeamFrom: toddb@rockcut.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Remote Name: 67.41.118.209 Date: 11 Nov 2003 Time: 01:18 PM
CommentsI am currently in the process of remodeling my kitchen and possibly need to replace a structural beam that supports the cantilever of the 2nd floor. The beam is (2) 2 x 12 timbers that span 144" (including Jack Studs). I am trying to gain 4" of ceiling height in order to move the wall cabinets up. I would like to replace the wood beam with a 7" steel I-beam.
Is there a table that shows a relation of wood - steel (ie.. (1) 7" steel I-beam = (2) 2x12 ?
Any other information would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
