Removal of wooden ceiling beams

30+ year old home with wooden ceiling beams. Beams are approximately 8" wide by 4" thick. The beams run perpendicular to the joists. There is also an undercap of the beams that frames the ceiling walls. Appears if the beams rest on this undercap. HOW IN THE WORLD DUE I REMOVE THEM? Thanks in advance Eric
