Beam in garage

We are looking at remodeling the attic space above our garage. The attic space is actually over half our garage and half of our family room behind the garage, with a bearing wall inbetween. In order to remove the parts of the trusses that will interfere with the room, I need to put a beam in the garage half to support the newly remodeled space. The beam will need to support the roof load, and one end of the new floor joists that will be installed. The other end of these floor joists will be supported by an existing bearing wall. The new floor joists will only be about 8' long. So the beam will be spanning the 28 feet across the garage, 8' from the rear wall in the garage. We will be beefing up the existing roof trusses in order to account for the parts of the trusses that will be removed, and therefore transferring the load down to this new beam. Any suggestions as to the size/type of beam that would handle this situation? Thank You. Jeff Taylor
