have a support beam in my living room with a jack under it in dead center of roomFrom: augie17@rcn.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 207.172.251.8 Date: 31 Aug 2003 Time: 01:03 AM
CommentsI have a I beam in my living room it is supported by a jack stand which is unsightly, being it is dead in the center of my room. it is a S6 type beam 1/4 inch thick. Structurally weak I know. I want to either replace it or I would really like to weld something to the sides of the beam to increase its structure, so it will span 24 feet without sagging. I have a row home and there is a bed room above also a attic. Will that support the house with limited sag? I was thinking of using 2 24 foot 3/16th wall 2X6 steel tubes welded to both sides of the beam parallel to the beams web, like a extra heavy box beam.
