pergola, deck coveringFrom: shigemotos@sbcglobal.net Category: Architecture and Building Design Remote Name: 69.3.148.32 Date: 19 Jun 2003 Time: 01:48 PM
CommentsI have a redwood deck that is approximately 16'X16'. I would like to build a pergola shade/roof over the entire deck. Can I span the 16' safely with only the support beams on the outside of the deck? I bought a couple of idea books that show a 4"x8" beam/stringer spanning 17'. Is that safe/feasible? A local redwood dealer said I would need a 4"x12" or two 2"x12" together to span that distance. The covering will either be 2"x2"'s or lattice held up with 1"x2"'s. What size support beams should I use, 4x4,4x6, or 6x6? Any light you could shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
