whitewashing kitchen cabinets

I am considering whitewashing my kitchen cabinets for an updated look. They are currently pickled finish. The problem is I keep getting conflicting info from the Home Improvement stores as to where I should start. Do I need to strip the cabinets first and then sand? Please help!!
